What is PAT Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.
Officially, it is also known as EET (Electrical Equipment Testing), according to changes made in 2020 in the 5th Edition of the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. The only problem with this is most people still use the phrase "PAT Testing", and even today few are aware of this name change!
The test includes a visual inspection and electrical tests using specialist PAT testing equipment. Appliances that pass receive a dated label, and you'll receive a full report of all items tested.
Common items that require PAT testing include:
- Computers and monitors
- Kettles, fridges and microwaves
- Extension leads
- Printers and photocopiers
- Power tools
- Any portable electrical device

- •For any failed appliances, reason for failure
- •Replacement of fuse or entire plug for failed appliance, when this will be adequate to make it fully pass the PAT test (see replacement charge/item below)

Changing Plug or Fuse
Only if this can change a Fail to a Pass. Most likely, your appliance failure rate will be low or possibly even zero, but when needed, changing a plug is more economical than buying a new appliance!
Wall Socket Testing
Optional - not part of PAT testing requirements
Confirm your wall sockets are safe and correctly wired.
